Symptoms of Lumbar Disc Herniation |
The major complaint for symptoms with lumbar spine disc herniation is the
low back, leg pain and numbness. Coughing and sneezing will often aggravate
the pain. Other aggravating factors are flexion and extension of the spine.
Usually flexion will cause more pain. You may also feel pain by sitting,
standing, walking, and turning. If the symptom gets worse when walking,
and relief of pain when resting, this type of symptom is usually called
claudication. In the case low back pain without a leg pain, it is rare
to be diagnosed as disc herniation. The leg pain is usually referred to
as sciatica and the symptom is often one-sided.
When the Disc Herniation Progresses |
When the condition of disc herniation becomes sever, patient may start
complaining about their loss of sensation, and weakness in their muscles.
Loss of sensation and weakness may persist if this condition is left untreated.
The symptom is usually on one side, however, if the damage or buldge of
the disc becomes sever, patient may feel the symptoms on both side of their
legs. This will indicate that there is a problem along the nerves located
at Cauda Equina. These patients will likely to suffer from symptoms such
as Bowel and Bladder disorders, numbness at the perineum.

When there is an inflammation at the disc, or compression on the nerve
roots, the low back and leg pain will occur. There are many nerves surrounding
the discs. Inflammation caused by the damage in these areas will likely
to increase cause pain.
