Repetitive micro trauma on the disc will cause damage to its structure.
When the damage gets too sever, buldging of the disc will likely to occur,
this increases the risk of protrusion of the disc. Disc is usually filled
with liquids. However, as we get older, the mass of the disk will decrease,
and it will eventually lose its flexibility. Aging of the disc is also
one of the causes for disc herniation. Repetitive stress on the disc will
cause the pain and symptoms to become chronic. Activities which involve
lifting and other physical activities are typical examples of that. Sudden
load of pressure to the disc will also cause damage. Sudden loads of pressure
can be caused by lifting heavy loads, sneezing and coughing. In either
case, the risks of disc Herniation is caused by chronic stress against
the disc for a long period of time.
Common Age Groups for Disc Herniation |
Usually, disc herniation will likely to occur within the ages of 20’s through 40’s. It is rare to see teens with disc herniation. Degeneration of the disc usually will not occur in this age group. However, there are still cases of disc herniation. In the age group of 50 and above, risk of Canal Stenosis will more likely to occur. Symptoms are very similar to disc herniation. However, there are still possibilities for disc herniation in the elderly groups also.
