Decrease in blood pressure in patients with hypertension from chiropractic manipulation for upper cervical spine. Hypertension is one of the criteria enlisted in metabolic syndrome. In the medical field, most patients are treated with prescriptions of antihypertensive medicine. However, when taking a medicine, there are always risks of side effects. From issue of Journal of Human Hypertension, research showed decrease in blood pressure in patients with hypertension from chiropractic adjustment on the atlas, the first vertebrae of the cervical spine. Hypertension is known for its capability of increasing the risk of strokes, heart disorders, arterial sclerosis, and cerebral ischemia. The test was done for 8 week duration without receiving antihypertensive medicine. Managing hypertension with chiropractic treatment can be a great drug-free approach. Doi:10.1038/sj.jhh.1002133 Decrease in anterior knee pain from chiropractic adjustment on sacroiliac joint. Many people think when there is a knee pain; the pain is actually caused by some type of stress in the knee. There have been several researches written on decrease in anterior knee pain from chiropractic adjustment on the sacroiliac joints. This research suggests its importance of approaching the conditions of pain or symptoms in broader perspective. Research also suggests that patients with knee complaint often have weakness in the muscle that supports the function of the knee. Quadriceps is one of the strongest muscles that are prone to be weak when this happens. Quadriceps is attached from pelvis down to the knees. Now the key here is the pelvis, a structure in our body that holds our spine and the entire upper body. When you have a knee problem, it may indicate stress on your knees; however, that knee problem may be secondary to the dysfunctional problem of the pelvis or sacroiliac joint. Medical doctors may give you relief with injections in the knee, but the relief is often temporarily. By examining the body from broader perspective, maybe you can find what the real underlying cause of your pain. Suter E, McMorland G, Herzog W, et al. Conservative lower back treatment reduces inhibition in knee-extensor muscles: a randomized controlled trial. Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, Feb. 2000:23(2), pp76-80. There is always an option before making commitment for surgery. Everyone is at risk of suffering from back pain at some point of their life. Many people will first visit orthopedic doctor for examination. You will probably take an x-ray or MRI to see if there’s herniated disc or not. If you are told that there is a bulging discs in your spine, doctor will give you prescriptions, injections, or may indicate the need for operation in your spine. If not, chances are your low back pain is categorized as non-specific low back pain. If doctor tells you to get a surgery for low back pain, you do not have to rush. There are always options for non-surgical approach. The study of research from New England Journal of Medicine states that MRI and surgery are being over used for patients with low back pain. Choice for surgery should be your last option in your list. The study suggests that surgery is recommended if the symptom is severe in pain and loss in function. Deyo R, Weinstein J. Low back pain. The New England Journal of Medicine 2001:344(5), pp. 363-369. Chiropractic care for patients suffering from symptoms of whiplash. There have been many reports about the benefits of chiropractic care for post traumatic automobile accidents or whiplash. Many patients do not report severity of pain right after the accident. However, many will suffer from symptoms such as headache, neck pain, dizziness, vertigo, vomiting eventually. In the journal of orthopedic medicine, study supported benefits of patients with post traumatic symptoms with chiropractic care. In a usual case, whiplash is caused by rear end collision which the head is “whipped” backwards at an instant second. This causes muscles and ligaments that supports the neck to wear and tear, and it disrupts the proper motion of the cervical spine. Chiropractic adjustments can restore proper motion in cervical spine to reduce the stress in joints and muscles. Rehabilitating the cervical spine after chiropractic care will also help the symptom to relieve much quicker. Khan S, Cook J, Gargan M, et al. Asymptomatic classification of whiplash injury and the implications for treatment. Journal of Orthopaedic Medicine 1999: Vol. 21, No. 1, pp22-25. Many patients respond well to chiropractic treatment for their headaches. In the research of Tuchin PJ, Pollard H, Bonello R, 22% of the participant showed 90% relief from their migraine. 50% showed significant relief after their trial of chiropractic treatment for six month with maximum of 16 treatments. Symptoms of migraine include nausea, vomiting, visual disturbance, light sensitivity, sound sensitivity, Aura with severe headache. Headaches are usually one-sided, in some cases both. These participants showed improvement in migraine frequency, duration of headache, disability and medication use. Tuchin PJ, Pollard H, Bonello R.
